BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

We're all for mainstream movies about gay men, starring well-known actors, but why not make a good movie, instead of a bad one? How about this? Why not let the gay cowboys live happily ever after? If you're looking for a realistic portrayal of homosexuality in The Wild West, why not watch Howard Hawks' Red River (1948), or Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (1969)? Sure, the characters in those movies aren't the main characters, nor is their love a main plotline, but, dammit, they're there, they're queer, and those are good movies. If you need to see a movie that deals honestly and openly with a man-on-man relationship, why not watch Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together (1997)? You want gay? That movie is gay.

(Editor's note: Having now actually seen this movie, I can truthfully say that everything I wrote here is absolutely true.)
